Donor Spotlight: The Skaar Family
Sophia and Eric Skaar joined the French International community five years ago when their oldest son was in Kindergarten and their middle son was in TPS. Now, with a 5th grader, a 3rd grader, and their daughter in pre-K8, they are more committed to the school than ever.
“French International is a wonderful learning institution. Our children have grown up speaking a second language, and that is an incredible gift. They are part of an international community where they spend every day with people of different backgrounds and cultures. Without French International, we would never have been able to offer them such a global upbringing in Portland, Oregon.”
Sophia and Eric also have a global background, having spent 8 years living in China and Hong Kong, where Eric continues to do business. In 2023, Sophia joined the Board of Trustees at French International, took on the co-chair role of the Campaign Committee, and made a leadership gift to the campaign.
“Supporting the Capital Campaign gives us an opportunity to leave a legacy through a meaningful improvement to the school for future families to enjoy and be inspired by.”
As part of the long-term strategic planning, French International has committed to establishing a permanent campus, including new Lower School and Maternelle buildings. The Campaign for French International will help fund the project and create state-of-the-art facilities to educate global thinkers.
“To transition the lower school campus from what feels like a state of impermanence to what will be a beautiful, long-term, well-considered education facility with the resources and infrastructure our exceptional teachers and students deserve.”
The Skaars look forward to all the ways their family will benefit from this campus transformation.
“Only our youngest will enjoy the space. However, we believe the overall impact on the school will be transformative. To see a community come together and give in support of education is an invaluable experience for all French International students. Furthermore, this type of improvement to an institution raises the playing field for the future of our children and French International alums.”
When asked why it is important for others to support the campaign, Sophia said, “The French International operating budget is funded by tuition. In order for the school to improve its facilities, its offerings, and its campus, we have to collectively give. One person or one family giving will not impact the improvement plans that the leadership team has so thoughtfully developed. If we all work together and give to the best of our abilities, we can execute these initiatives in a way that will be transformative. This collaborative experience is something the community can be proud of for generations to come.”
